Trevon Moehrig 2021 NFL Draft Profile

Publish Date: April 26, 2021

The 2021 NFL Draft will be a great event for teams to start building for their future. Here is the Trevon Moehrig 2021 NFL Draft Profile.

Trevon Moehrig Background

Position: Safety

Size: 6-foot-1, 202 pounds

Class: Junior

2020 stats: 47 total tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss, 2 interceptions, 9 passes defended

Over his three seasons at TCU, Trevon Moehrig developed into one of the best safeties in the country. Following the 2020 season, he has decided to enter the 2021 NFL Draft.

Moehrig was a four-star cornerback prospect who stayed in state to play with the Horned Frogs. He was a special teams ace to start his freshman season, but did end up cracking the starting lineup. Moehrig finished the season with 15 total tackles, one interception and one pass defended. TCU finished the year with a 7-6 record and a win in the Cheez-It Bowl. As a sophomore, Moehrig started the whole year and tallied 62 total tackles, four interceptions and 11 passes defended. The Horned Frogs went 5-7 and failed to make a bowl game. In the 2020 season, Moehrig racked up 47 total tackles, two interceptions and nine passes defended, as he led the Horned Frogs to a 6-4 record. Their bowl game was cancelled due to COVID.

After establishing himself as a great college player, Moehrig decided to leave for the pros. He is currently projected to be a late first or early second round pick.

Strengths

Trevon Moehrig 2021 NFL Draft Profile

Trevon Moehrig

Moehrig has good size for the safety position at 6-foot-1 and 202 pounds. This allows him to match up with bigger wide receivers and tight ends in coverage. With his size he is able to contest a lot of catches thrown to bigger targets. He also is able to come down and lay down some big hits against ball carriers.

In his pass coverage, he displayed good ball production and good ball skills. He tracks the ball well in the air, making him look like an outfielder in baseball. Once the ball is in the air he has the athleticism and speed to break on the ball and make a play. He can swat the ball down or hit the receiver to break up the play, but also has solid hands and is capable of picking the ball off with some frequency.

His awareness, paired with his athleticism, really helps him to be successful as a deep safety. He reads the quarterback’s eyes well when playing zone, which helps him diagnose where the ball is going. Moehrig can be trusted in zone coverage because of his eye discipline. He also can track where the ball is going fairly well in the running game.

Weaknesses

Moehrig has the size to be a much better tackler. At times he can go for the big hit and miss. Other times he simply doesn’t wrap up and finish the play. If he can focus on finishing the play off with a good form tackle, it will limit the amount of big plays given up.

While his awareness is good, Moehrig does struggle with double-moves and does get beat on them a decent amount. He can also lose track of the ball carrier when he isn’t playing in a deep safety role. A lot of his struggles come when he is not playing in deep zone coverage in terms of awareness.

His run support runs hot and cold. Because he can be late to find the football at times from the box, it makes it tougher for him to have a true impact in run support. To go along with that, his missed tackles will need to be cleaned up for him to improve in this area.

Projected Draft Range: First Round Pick-Second Round Pick
