Tommy Doyle is another prospect who opted out for the season, as the MAC initially canceled their season. The senior started to prepare for the 2021 NFL Draft.

Doyle was a three-star prospect out of Minnesota, who was primarily recruited as a defensive end. He bulked up and made the change to offensive line at Miami. After redshirting his first year on campus, Doyle made four starts in 2017 before missing the rest of the season with a foot injury. He made 10 starts at right tackle in 2018, as the RedHawks went 6-6, but were not selected for a bowl game. In the 2019 season, Doyle started 13 games at left tackle, as Miami won eight games and the MAC. He was named First Team All-Mac for his performance.

Doyle faced his fair share of tough opponents over his career including Chase Young and A.J. Epenesa, but he could have really benefited from one more year of college football. He is currently projected to be a third day pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Strengths

His size is his biggest strength right now. He is one of the taller offensive tackles in the class at 6-foot-8 and he has good reach. When it comes to being measured at the combine, NFL teams will take notice. This also shows up on the field, as he towered over some of the defenders he went up against in the MAC. NFL teams may see his size and length and feel he can develop into a solid NFL offensive lineman.

With his size comes strength. Doyle has good strength for the position and can be seen moving bodies and clearing holes in the running game. In the passing game, he is rarely beaten by power rushers. His strength is even more apparent because he is a physical player. Doyle enjoys contact and pushing players completely out of the way.

His awareness and IQ will also be things that NFL teams like. He is always ready and looking for work, so when a blitzer comes, he recognizes it and picks the man up. His history as a defensive end in high school likely helps him pick up on what defenses are trying to do. There aren’t many times on tape that Doyle will get bested mentally.

Weaknesses

Doyle isn’t very athletic compared to other draft prospects at his position. He can move decently, but it definitely isn’t a strength. His speed, quickness, agility and flexibility all are below average. His lack of agility shows up when a player makes an inside-out or an outside-in move on him and he can’t keep up. This means he has to win with power, smarts and technique.

His pass blocking needs a lot of work before he can be ready for the next level. Doyle could be ready for the NFL as a run blocker, but as a pass blocker, he will need to improve. He gives up the edge too easily and struggles to deal with athletic speed rushers. His performance against A.J. Epenesa, a power rusher, was good, so Doyle needs to focus on improving against quicker players.

Like many offensive tackle prospects, Doyle needs to work on his technique. His pad level is already naturally high, so keeping his pad level low gives him trouble. In pass protection, he needs to get his hands on defenders earlier to help keep speed rushers in front of him. He has strong hands and displays that in the running game, but he needs to use them better in pass protection.
