Tariq Woolen 2022 NFL Draft Profile

Publish Date: April 26, 2022

The 2022 NFL Draft will be a great event for teams to start building for their future. Here is the Tariq Woolen 2022 NFL Draft Profile.

Tariq Woolen Background

Position: Cornerback

Size: 6-foot-4, 205 pounds

Class: Redshirt Senior

2021 stats: 25 total tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 1 interception, 5 passes defended

Woolen moved positions during his college career and now plays cornerback. He has become good enough to be a solid NFL Draft prospect.

After being a three-star prospect, Woolen decided to play for UTSA in college. He redshirted his first year on campus, then played sparingly as a wide receiver over the next two seasons. Woolen moved to corner for his junior season. He performed well with one interception and four passes defended. He helped the Roadrunners go 7-5. In 2021, he had one interception and five passes defended. UTSA had a banner season with Woolen’s play, as they went 12-1.

When the season ended, Woolen started preparing for the 2022 NFL Draft. He is currently projected to be a mid-round pick.

Tariq Woolen Strengths

Woolen is huge for a cornerback at any level. He stands at 6-foot-4 and 205 pounds. His frame will be one that many wide receivers aren’t used to going up against. With his height comes long 33 and 5/8-inch arms, which he can use to be disruptive.

His athleticism for his size is also great. Woolen moves well, showing off good quickness and agility. He has smooth hips for transitions. His top-end speed proved to be great at the NFL Combine, as he ran a 4.26 40-yard dash. His play speed may not be that fast, but he has great speed and athleticism.

It is easy to see Woolen is a former receiver as he has natural ball skills. While he doesn’t always track the ball the greatest, he uses his length to be disruptive at the catch point. He can come down with a pass break up or interception on some tough plays.

Tariq Woolen Weaknesses

Woolen is still new to the position and is learning all of its nuances of it. He can maintain leverage better and show better anticipation. As he gets more reps, he will have more awareness. His lack of experience leaves him a step behind, but he has plenty of room for improvement with more time.

He doesn’t offer much in run support. Woolen has the size and strength to shed blocks and needs to start showing some more aggression. If he starts shedding more blocks he can make an impact as a tackler and really help a defense.

While he has the size to be a good zone corner, Woolen sometimes shows a lack of awareness. Right now he is more qualified to cover in man-to-man situations. As he gets more time playing the position he can show better awareness and eye balance in zone coverage.

Projected Draft Range: Third Round Pick-Fifth Round Pick
