Avila showed off his versatility over his five seasons with the TCU Horned Frogs. Now he is in the 2023 NFL Draft.
As a four-star prospect, Avila decided to stay in the state to play for the Horned Frogs. He redshirted his first season on campus and saw limited time in his second season. Avila stepped into the starting lineup all across the offensive line in 2020. His play helped TCU go 6-4 on the season. In 2021, he started at center and was First Team All Big-12. The Horned Frogs struggled with a 5-7 record. For the 2022 season, Avila was an All-American at left guard. He led TCU all the way to the National Championship Game.
Following a great last season at TCU, Avila is now headed to the pros. He is a projected day two pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Avila has a solid frame for an interior offensive lineman. He stands at 6-foot-3.5 and 332 pounds. He also has decent length with 33-inch arms. His size gives him great power. He can anchor when pass blocking and is able to move people while run blocking. His ability to sustain blocks comes directly from his strength.
He is a versatile offensive lineman, which will give him plenty of fits for NFL teams. Avila played tackle, guard and center at TCU. In the NFL, Avila can play either guard sport or center. Not only did he play all three positions, but he has experience on both sides of the line of scrimmage. He won’t have to work on dropping for pass protection to a new direction.
His power makes him a very good run blocker. He shows decent technique and is able to clear big holes for running backs to get through. Avila has enough athleticism to get out in space and make blocks in the running game as well. Teams can feel confident running behind Avila.
Avila needs to work on his hand usage. His hand timing can be off, but his hands can also get too wide. He needs to keep his hands inside to control blocks more. Improving his hand placement will help him sustain blocks longer.
His pad level does get too tall at times. Avila has plenty of power, but he can lose some when he stands too upright. Doing so gives ground to power rushers in pass protection and can give him trouble moving people out of the way in the run game. Keeping his pad level low can make him even more powerful.
He needs to recognize where pressure is coming from quicker. Avila can be late to identify blitzes, stunts and twists, which can result in the quarterback being sacked. He needs to start identifying pressure sooner so that he can work with his teammates better on how to handle it.
