Petit-Frere manned both tackle spots for Ohio State during his career. He is now trying to take that experience to the NFL.
As a five-star prospect out of high school, Petit-Frere decided to sign with Ohio State. He redshirted in 2018 and saw playing time in all 14 games of 2019. The Buckeyes went to the College Football Playoff, but lost to Clemson in the semifinal that season. Petit-Frere was named Second Team All-Big Ten in 2020 at right tackle. He helped the team reach the National Championship Game. Petit-Frere moved to left tackle in 2021 and was a First Team All-Big Ten selection. The Buckeyes again made the College Football Playoff, but lost in the semifinal.
After three solid seasons on the field for the Buckeyes, Petit-Frere declared for the 2022 NFL Draft. He is currently projected to be a second-day pick.
Nicholas Petit-Frere Strengths
Petit-Frere has a solid frame for an NFL offensive tackle. He stands at 6-foot-5 and 315 pounds and he looks like he could add more strength if necessary. With his height and weight comes good length, which he uses well to control his matchups.
He has solid athleticism as well. Petit-Frere has nice body control and flexibility. On top of that, he also displays solid quickness and lateral agility. His ability to move well prevents pass rushers from getting the edge and he is able to make blocks downfield in the running game. Petit-Frere is one of the more athletic tackles in the class.
His athleticism helps him block speed rushers well. While there were some speedy pass rushers who beat him, for the most part, he can mirror well and he has solid pass sets. Petit-Frere should be able to handle athletic pass rushers with some added work on his technique.
Nicholas Petit-Frere Weaknesses
Despite a solid frame, Petit-Frere needs to add strength. While he should be able to add weight to his frame, he currently has trouble moving defenders when run blocking. He also struggles to anchor when pass blocking. The added strength will help him win more of his matchups.
When pass blocking, Petit-Frere will struggle with power rushers. This specifically showed up in the game against Michigan. Adding strength will help this area of his game. but this can also be improved with better hand placement and timing.
Maintaining leverage is something Petit-Frere needs to work on. Petit-Frere can stand up too tall and lose some of his power. He also lunges too much and gets off balance. Staying patient and maintaining a good pad level will help him win more of his matchups.
