The bowl season gives fans and scouts alike a chance to analyze NFL Draft prospects against solid competition. Bowl scheduling allows all eyes to be on each game. Here are the NFL Draft prospects in the 2021 Frisco Football Classic.
Miami RedHawks Draft Prospects
Dominique Robinson, Edge
Robinson is one of the more interesting prospects in that, he moved from wide receiver to defensive end. In his career, he has tallied 37 total tackles, 11 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks. For the 2021 season, Robinson has racked up 28 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. The growth that he has shown at his new position has been impressive.
At 6-foot-4 and 252 pounds, Robinson has adequate size for an NFL edge rusher. As a former receiver, he has plenty of athletic ability for the next level. He is still learning the position, but his progress so far should intrigue NFL teams. Robinson is expected to be drafted late in the 2022 NFL Draft by a team that wants to continue to develop him.
Projected Draft Range: Sixth Round Pick-Undrafted Free Agent
Weatherford’s play over four season for the RedHawks has been impressive and drawn some attention. He has posted 209 total tackles, four interceptions and 19 passes defended in his career. In the 2021 season, Weatherford has 66 total tackles, two interceptions and four passes defended for Miami.
He stands at 6-foot-4 and 221 pounds, which gives him great measurables for a safety. Because he is bigger, NFL teams may elect to move him to linebacker and let him improve their pass coverage. He would have another year of eligibility if he returned to school, but if he goes into the draft, he could be picked in the later rounds.
Projected Draft Range: Sixth Round Pick-Undrafted Free Agent
North Texas Mean Green Draft Prospects
Dion Novil, DL
Novil has been at North Texas for five seasons and has made an impact that is greater than the statsheet. He has 181 total tackles, 36 tackles for loss and 10 sacks in his career. This season, Novil has registered 46 total tackles, eight tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. He has been a disruptive presence on the Mean Green defensive line for the last few seasons.
His size will have him fitting in well at the NFL level. At 6-foot-4 and 330 pounds, Novil can play defensive tackle or nose tackle depending on what he is asked to do. Teams may take a flier on him because it isn’t easy to find players of his size, especially later in the draft. He will likely be an undrafted free agent, but could make a roster.
Projected Draft Range: Undrafted Free Agent
Jyaire Shorter, WR
Shorter has been at North Texas for a long time, but has battled injuries throughout his career. He has 35 receptions for 692 yards and nine touchdowns in his career. Most of that production came in 2019. Shorter has only played two games this season, hauling in six passes for 107 yards along the way.
He has a solid build for an NFL receiver at 6-foot-2 and 215 pounds. It is unfortunate that he hasn’t been able to stay on the field more for the Mean Green, as he hasn’t had a chance to really improve his draft stock in two seasons. If he is able to play in this game, he will want to show what he can do. He would be an undrafted free agent if he declared for the draft.
Projected Draft Range: Undrafted Free Agent
