Sainristil started his career as a wide receiver, but found success at cornerback at Michigan. He is now in the 2024 NFL Draft.
As a three-star recruit in the class of 2019, Sainristil signed with Michigan out of Massachusetts. He played wide receiver his first three years on campus, totaling 37 catches for 539 yards and five touchdowns. Sainristil moved to corner before the 2022 season. That year, he totaled 58 tackles, one interception and seven passes defended. He helped Michigan make the College Football Playoff that season. In 2023, he became more impactful with 44 total tackles, six interceptions and six passes defended. He led Michigan to a National Championship.
Following the National Championship Game, Sainristil declared for the 2024 NFL Draft. He is currently projected to be a day-two pick.
Mike Sainristil Strengths
Sainristil is a great athlete for the corner position. He ran a 4.47 second 40-yard dash time at the NFL Combine and that speed shows up when he has to match up with wide receivers down the field. Sainristil also has good quickness and agility, which come in handy when he is playing in the slot. His short area burst makes him a good defender.
His time as a former receiver can be seen in his ball skills. He tracks the ball well in the air and attacks the catchpoint. Sainristil gets a good jump on balls and goes after them like he is the receiver. He had great ball production at Michigan and if he gets the ball in his hands, he is a threat to return it.
While he isn’t the biggest player, he really helps a team with his willingness in run support. When he is in the slot, he can be an asset by pursuing the football and bringing down the ball carrier. He doesn’t let his size limit him and can be trusted on the field for early down work.
Mike Sainristil Weaknesses
He is one of the smaller corners in the draft, standing 5-foot-9 and 182 pounds. Sainristil has arms measuring in at less than 31 inches. With that frame comes limited strength. He will be one of the smallest guys on the field in the NFL. Sainristil can struggle to tackle with his limited size.
While he can do many different things from the slot, he will have to play just in the slot at the NFL level. He doesn’t have the size to matchup with receivers on the outside. Teams looking for corners to play multiple spots may stay away from Sainristil.
Sainristil is still learning the position in a few ways. He could use more route recognition to jump routes even more. Sainristil also could get his head around sooner when in coverage. In addition, he can stay disciplined and not fall for double moves as often.
Projected Draft Range: Second Round Pick-Third Round Pick
Draft Grade: Third Round Pick
