Each NFL team will be evaluated heading into this year’s draft, as our staff recaps their last season, highlights their needs and pinpoints their potential 2022 NFL Draft targets. The Miami Dolphins are the subject of today’s 2022 NFL Draft profile.
Summary
The Miami Dolphins ended the 2021 regular season with a record of 9-8 under Brian Flores. The season was really a tale of two halves. The first half was terrible with many glaring problems. The first issue was the offensive line in Miami. They had a terrible time protecting Tagovailoa as he took many sacks within the first two games of the season. He took two sacks against New England in week one and suffered another two in the next week against the Bills. He would end up getting hurt during that game which would have him sidelined for three weeks.
During these three weeks, Jacoby Brissett took over a quarterback and struggled as well. The Dolphins had difficulties scoring and Brissett had a hard time dealing with the burden of a struggling offensive line. Tagovailoa would come back in a week six matchup with the Jaguars. This game ended up being a disaster as Jacksonville would beat them by kicking a game-winning field goal. The Dolphins’ struggles would continue as they lost two more games against the Falcons and the Bills. This takes us to week 9 where the Dolphins flipped the script.
After the horrid week 8 game against the Bills, the Dolphins would end up winning seven games in a row. The standout aspect was the defense in that stretch. Their defense was centered around the blitz which was a nightmare for opposing defenses. It shut down the likes of Lamar Jackson who is one of the most versatile quarterbacks in the NFL. The defense was seventh in sacks in the NFL in 2021. Another great aspect that really stuck out was wide receiver Jaylen Waddle. He was one of the most outstanding rookie receivers in the league with his speed and great hands. He had over a thousand yards during his rookie year.
Even with the seven-game winning streak, this was not enough for the Dolphins to make the playoffs. The streak would be snapped in a lopsided 34-3 loss to the Titians. Miami would then win their last game against the Patriots as the Dolphins ended the season with a win and a season sweep of the Patriots. The ride did not end there for the Dolphins, soon after the regular season, Brian Flores got fired after really turning this Dolphins team around in three seasons. This leads to the Dolphins next big move in the hiring of Mike McDaniel who will be their next head coach. Finally, this leads us to the most recent move which was the signing of Tyreek Hill. This was huge as Hill is one of the be receivers in the NFL. Miami seems to have a bright future but still has some work to do in the upcoming 2022 NFL Draft.
2022 NFL Picks
The Miami Dolphins have one pick in the first three rounds of the 2022 NFL Draft:
3rd round (1 pick): No. 102 via San FranciscoÂ
Team needs
Offensive Guard: As said above one of the glaring struggles on this Dolphins teams was their offensive line. It benefits them to add depth to the offensive guard position. They have already made one move by signing left guard Conner Williams who had four solid seasons with the Cowboys.
2022 Draft Targets
Third round:
No. 102: Ed Ingram, LSU, OG
Engram was a four 4-year starter for the Tigers while he was in Baton Rouge. He is a second team all SEC player. During his senior season he had over 811 offensive snaps. He has the ability block defenders and protect the quarterback with his strength and power. Throughout his whole career at LSU, he played in 45 game and started 34 times. He can also play both right and left guard if need be. If Miami took him in the third round it would be a step in the right direction. Fixing the offensive line should be the Dolphins number one priority with how much they struggled in 2021. The concludes the Dolphins 2022 Draft Profile.
