Mekhi Becton 2020 NFL Draft Profile

The 2020 NFL Draft will be a great event for teams to start building for their future and The Game Haus will be doing scouting reports on some of the top prospects. Here is the Mekhi Becton 2020 NFL Draft profile.

Background

Position: Offensive Tackle

Size: 6-foot-7, 367 pounds

Class: Junior

2019 stats: First-Team All-ACC

Becton was a four-star recruit out of high school and chose to go to Louisville over Michigan, Oregon and Virginia Tech. He immediately started making an impact for the Cardinals, which paved the way to him being a top draft prospect.

He started 10 games as a freshman, as Lamar Jackson led the team to an 8-5 record. Becton’s blocking helped the offense be effective and aided Jackson in winning the Heisman Trophy. Louisville had an awful two-win season, but Becton blocked well when he was a sophomore in 2018. The Cardinals had a revival in 2019, winning eight games, including the Music City Bowl against Mississippi State.

After already putting a lot of good play on tape for the NFL to evaluate, Becton decided to forgo his senior season and enter the 2020 NFL Draft. He is currently projected to be picked in the mid-first round.

Strengths

Mekhi Becton #73

His size and length are two of his biggest assets. At 6-foot-7 and 367 pounds, Becton has elite size for a tackle prospect. He also has a wingspan that belongs in the NBA, which helps him keep rushers at bay. If he can make sure he doesn’t add too much weight to his frame, Becton can keep some athleticism and power.

Becton’s strength and power are among the best in the class. He outweighs every defensive lineman he will be going up against and at times, can throw them around without much effort or the best technique. Pass rushers have to get around him, as if he gets his hands on them it is hard to get by him. In the run game, Becton moves bodies well out of the way, clearing big holes.

He can move pretty well for a tackle, especially one of his size. With his power, the ability to move that well makes him a truly unique tackle prospect. Becton can slide his feet to stay in front of pass rushers, but can also get to the second level in the running game at a decent rate. The combination of size and mobility will give NFL offensive line coaches something to marvel at.

Weaknesses

Over his career at Louisville, Becton had massive fluctuations with his weight. That is something that could be corrected with discipline. If he can keep his mobility and power at a decent weight, he has the potential to be a starting tackle in the NFL for many years.

His technique could use some work, as a lot of times he was able to win just based on his physical traits. This starts with his hands, as he needs to get them engaged earlier and he needs to strike with better placement and force. If he gets his length involved more, he just gets tougher to beat. He’ll also have to clean up his footwork at the next level.

Because he is so big, his pad level doesn’t always get low enough. He will have to make sure he stays low and if he does so, he should be able to generate more power. Standing straight up makes him lose power and also makes him easier for speed rushers to beat.

Projected Draft Range: First Round Pick
