The 2023 NFL Draft will be a great event for teams to start building for their future. Here is the Matthew Bergeron 2023 NFL Draft Profile.
Position: Offensive Tackle
School: Syracuse
Size: 6-foot-5, 318 pounds
Class: Senior
2022 Stats: Second Team All-ACC
Bergeron played a lot of football at Syracuse making him a very experienced offensive tackle. Now he is in the 2023 NFL Draft.
He was a three-star prospect out of Canada who signed on with Syracuse in the class of 2019. As a true freshman, Bergeron started five games at right tackle and was named a PFF All-Freshman Second Team. The Orange went 5-7 that season. In 2020, Bergeron started every game with time spent at both left and right tackle. Unfortunately, Syracuse struggled with a 1-10 record. For the 2021 season, Bergeron started at left tackle and was an Honorable Mention All-ACC member. Syracuse improved to a 5-7 record. He returned for 2022 and was a Second Team All-ACC selection. His play led the Orange to a 7-5 record.
After opting out of the Pinstripe Bowl, Bergeron declared for the 2023 NFL Draft. He is currently projected to be a day-two pick.
Bergeron has a solid frame for an offensive lineman. He stands at 6-foot-5 and 318 pounds, which shows his frame is well-filled out. Along with his size comes decent length, as he has 33 and 3/4-inch arms. While some may want to move him inside to guard, he meets the measurables to be a tackle.
Right now, Bergeron is more advanced as a run blocker. He keeps his pad level low and drives through defensive linemen. Bergeron is able to sustain blocks well. He is a solid athlete and can get to the second level well. Bergeron is also able to get out in front of running blocks on the perimeter, leading them downfield.
He can do what is needed athletically for a tackle. Bergeron is decently flexible and has good quickness. As mentioned, he can get to the second level, but he is good in space overall. He can match up with athletic pass rushers at the NFL level.
Bergeron can struggle with power rushers. While he has decent strength, he has trouble anchoring when rushers come at him. He can add strength, but can also work on his technique to help deal with power rushers at the next level.
There are parts of his technique that need work. Bergeron could have better hand placement and timing. He needs to keep his hands inside more, as they can get to wide. Bergeron could also clean up his footwork to be more consistent, especially when pass-blocking.
While he has solid measurables, he needs to add strength. As mentioned, he has trouble with power rushers. Adding strength could also help his run blocking. If teams wish to move him to guard, he will really need to improve his strength to deal with bigger defensive linemen.
Projected Draft Range: Second Round Pick-Third Round Pick
Draft Grade: Third-Round Pick
