The 2022 NFL Draft will be a great event for teams to start building for their future. Here is the Matt Corral 2022 NFL Draft Profile.
Position: Quarterback
Size: 6-foot-1, 205 pounds
Class: Redshirt Junior
2021 stats: 3,343 passing yards, 20 passing touchdowns, 5 interceptions, 67.7 percent completion, 8.7 yards per attempt, 614 rushing yards, 11 rushing touchdowns
Corral really improved his play during the 2021 season and had a great year. He is now one of the best quarterbacks in the 2022 NFL Draft.
As a U.S. Army All-American out of California, Corral decided to travel across the country to attend Ole Miss. He appeared in four games in his first year on campus and played sparingly as a redshirt. Corral then played more regularly as a redshirt freshman, passing for 1,362 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions on 59 percent completion. He fully took over the starting job as a redshirt sophomore in 2020. Corral passed for 3,337 yards, 29 touchdowns and 14 interceptions on 70.9 percent completion. Ole Miss went 5-5 that season. During the 2021 season, Corral passed for 3,343 yards, 20 touchdowns and five interceptions on 67.7 percent completion. The Rebels went 10-3 and finished the year with an appearance in the Sugar Bowl, which Corral had to leave due to injury.
After the bowl game injury, Corral declared for the 2022 NFL Draft. He is currently projected to be a first or second-round pick.
There won’t be many quarterbacks in the class with as much arm talent as Corral. He has great arm strength that allows him to push the ball downfield. Corral also can get some real velocity on his passes, which helps him find receivers before defenders can jump the route.
Corral has the ability to play out of structure. When a play breaks down, he can escape the pocket and make plays whether that be with his arm and his legs. He runs the ball well and his willingness to do so opens up the offense.
He has improved his accuracy over his career. Corral has decent deep ball accuracy, which pairs nicely with his strong arm. He can hit targets in the short and intermediate areas of the field as well. Corral hits receivers in stride and gives them a chance to run after the catch.
Corral will be one of the smaller quarterbacks in the class at 6-foot-1 and 205 pounds. With him running the ball and taking hits, his durability will come into question. He already was injured in the bowl game and will need to prove he is healthy and can stay healthy. His size will give people a reason to doubt that he is durable.
His decision-making improved in 2021, but there were still plenty of plays where Corral made questionable decisions. Corral trusts in his arm way too much and tries to really squeeze the ball into tight windows, which leads to turnovers. He throws it back across his body and can misread safeties, who are reading his eyes.
He has also worked on going through his progressions, but Corral still has a long way to go. Ole Miss runs a lot of RPOs and plays with easy reads. Corral needs more experience scanning the whole field and going from read to read.
Projected Draft Range: First Round Pick-Second Round Pick
