The 2022 NFL Draft will be a great event for teams to start building for their future. Here is the Martin Emerson 2022 NFL Draft Profile.
Martin Emerson Background
Position: Cornerback
Size: 6-foot-2, 201 pounds
Class: Junior
2021 stats: 49 total tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 3 passes defended
Emerson was a three-year starter for Mississippi State and made a big impact. He is now headed to the NFL Draft.
As a three-star prospect out of Florida, he decided to go to Mississippi State for college. He worked his way into the starting lineup midway through his freshman season, registering one interception and one pass defended along the way. The Bulldogs went 6-7 that season, losing in the Music City Bowl to end the year. He was a full-time starter as a sophomore and finished the season with 11 passes defended. The Bulldogs struggled with a 4-7 record. Emerson played well, but registered just three passes defended in 2021. He helped Mississippi State win seven games and make the Liberty Bowl.
Following the season, Emerson decided to declare for the 2022 NFL Draft. He is currently projected to be a mid-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Martin Emerson Strengths
Emerson’s greatest strength are his measurables. He stands at 6-foot-2 and 201 pounds, which is great size for an NFL cornerback. To go with his good height and weight, he has good length. His arms were measured at 33 and 1/2 inches.
He has good physicality as a corner. His size and length make him a solid press corner. He maintains good balance and contacts a receiver early in the rep. As the rep goes on, Emerson maintains contact and makes it hard for corners to separate because of his physicality.
Emerson’s size makes him a good zone corner. He can use his length to be disruptive both early and late in a rep. On top of that, he does a great job of using his eyes and staying patient. He reads the quarterback well and recognizes where the ball is going to go. Emerson then displays solid ball skills.
Martin Emerson Weaknesses
Emerson doesn’t have the long speed to keep up with some wide receivers. He can give up big gains because receivers outrun him if they can beat his press coverage. While he can match up with bigger receivers decently well, teams can move things around and get favorable matchups well.
A team drafting Emerson should play zone coverage a majority of the time. Emerson doesn’t mirror well and his lack of speed does come into play. He sometimes can keep up with receivers because of his physicality, but his man coverage is a weakness.
Even though he has solid measurables, Emerson has not shown he can be an asset as a tackler or against the run. He doesn’t shed as quickly as he should and then doesn’t always make tackles. With his size, he can work on these areas.
Projected Draft Range: Third Round Pick-Fifth Round Pick
