Marcus Jones 2022 NFL Draft Profile

Publish Date: April 26, 2022

The 2022 NFL Draft will be a great event for teams to start building for their future. Here is the Marcus Jones 2022 NFL Draft Profile.

Marcus Jones Background

Position: Cornerback

Size: 5-foot-8, 174 pounds

Class: Senior

2021 stats: 47 total tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 5 interceptions, 13 passes defended, 1 forced fumble

Jones was an absolute game-changer during his college career. Now, he is trying to make the same impact in the NFL.

As a three-star recruit out of Alabama, Jones signed with Troy. He had two interceptions, six passes defended and four total touchdowns as a freshman as he showed his defensive and return prowess. In his second season, he had one interception, eight passes defended and one touchdown. Following the season he transferred to Houston. After redshirting for a season, he registered one interception, four passes defended and one return touchdown. Houston went 3-5 that season. In 2021, he totaled five interceptions, 13 passes defended and two return touchdowns. He helped Houston go 12-2 and win the Birmingham Bowl.

Following a great college career, Jones is going to the next level. He is a projected third to fifth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Marcus Jones Strengths

Jones is a good athlete in several different ways. He has good acceleration, as he gets to top speed very quickly. Jones is very fast and agile as well. His quick footwork really helps him mirror receivers from the slot. He may be small, but he makes up for it with extreme quickness and athleticism.

His ball skills are also very good. Jones can track the ball in the air well and is always close enough to attack the catch point. Once the ball is near enough, he can swat it away or intercept it. Once the ball is in his hands, he is a threat to bring it back for a touchdown.

A lot of teams will love Jones because of his return ability. He can return kicks, punts and interceptions for touchdowns. He is electric once the ball is in his hands and makes defenders miss. His added skills with the ball in his hands were even used on offense at Houston, which could give him some additional value.

Marcus Jones Weaknesses

His size will be the first weakness that people notice. He stands at 5-foot-8 and 174 pounds, which will make him one of the smallest corners in the league. His lack of height will resign him to playing in the slot at the next level.

When Jones fears he will get beat in coverage, he grabs too much. He was able to get away with it a lot more in college, but in the NFL, he will get some holding and pass interferences called on him. Jones needs to play more disciplined at the next level.

Jones relies on his athleticism too much in coverage. He doesn’t recognize how wide receivers will attack him and he doesn’t anticipate well. Jones can improve his awareness and in doing so, can get even better at his craft.

Projected Draft Range: Third Round Pick-Fifth Round Pick
