The 2025 NFL Draft will be a great event for teams to start building for their future. Here is the Lathan Ransom NFL Draft Profile.
Position: Safety
School: Ohio State
Size: 6-foot, 206 pounds
Class: Senior
2024 stats: 76 total tackles, 9 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 1 interception, 2 passes defended, 3 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery, 1 touchdown
Ransom was a four-star recruit in the class of 2020 who signed with Ohio State out of Arizona. He played sparingly in 2020, totaling five tackles. In 2021, Ransom played a little bit more, registering 38 tackles and five passes defended. He was an impact player starting in 2022, as Ransom had 74 total tackles, one interception and three passes defended. He helped Ohio State win 11 games that season. In 2023, he racked up 34 total tackles, one interception and two passes defended. Ohio State again won 11 games that season. Last season, Ransom accrued 76 total tackles, one interception and two passes defended. He led the Buckeyes to a national championship in his last season.
Following the season, Ransom has been preparing for the 2025 NFL Draft. He is currently projected to be a mid-round pick.
Ransom has solid size for an NFL safety. He stands at 6-foot and 206 pounds. With his size comes good play strength, which can be seen with his hard hits. He could add a little more play strength, but his frame is pretty well filled out already. Ransom will look the part of an NFL strong safety.
His run support is better than a lot of other safeties in this class. Ransom is comfortable playing near the line of scrimmage and is able to shed blocks well for a safety. He is able to get through traffic, evading blocks in his pursuit of ball carriers. Ransom shows good pursuit and can lay big hits down on ball carriers. While he does miss some tackles, he makes a lot of them too, showing his good nose for the football.
His coverage has been solid in a few specific ways. Ransom can play man-to-man coverage against tight ends and hold up well. He can also play a variety of zone coverages underneath and will do well, showing good eye-balance. Ransom can play deep zone as well, but may be tested by NFL speed.
Ransom doesn’t have the greatest ball production or ball skills. He had just three interceptions and seven passes defended in the last three seasons. Ransom can do a better job of turning his head and finding the football. He can also attack the catchpoint better to make more plays on the ball.
He will not be great if regularly used in man-to-man coverage against wide receivers. Ransom has trouble mirroring receivers as they get in and out of their breaks. Receivers separate and get open against Ransom. Teams will have to use him in a specific way in coverage to get the most out of him.
His deep zone coverage could have some issues at the next level. He simply doesn’t have the same range as other safeties in the class and could get picked on at the NFL level. Ransom is susceptible to giving up big plays over the top and is better used near the line of scrimmage than in a deep zone.
Projected Draft Range: Third Round Pick-Fifth Round Pick
Draft Grade: Third Round Pick
