As a five-star recruit Suamataia signed with Oregon in the class of 2021 out of Utah. He played in one game in 2021 for the Ducks redshirting that season. Following the season, he transferred closer to home to play for BYU. He started 12 games for the Cougars in the 2022 season and was named Second Team Freshman All-American. His play helped the Cougars go 8-5. He returned in 2023 and made the All-Big 12 Second Team. The Cougars did not have as much success despite Suamataia’s good play, winning just five games.
Following the season, Suamataia declared for the 2024 NFL Draft. He is currently projected to be a day two pick.
Kingsley Suamataia Strengths
Suamataia has solid size for the position at the NFL level. He stands 6-foot-6 and 324 pounds. It looks like he could fill out his frame a bit more if needed. With his good size, he has good length. While it won’t likely be measured at elite levels, he has long enough arms to control his matchups.
For his size, Suamataia moves pretty well. He is quick at the snap of the ball and engages defenders quickly. Suamataia can get to the second level and execute his assignment. He has good kick slides in pass protection with the ability to move laterally in that regard.
His strength is also an asset in a few different ways. He can really clear space when run blocking. Suamataia finishes plays wells as a mauler. In pass protection, he is able to hold his ground with a strong anchor and can hold up against power rushers.
Kingsley Suamataia Weaknesses
Suamataia is a young tackle and that can show up on tape. He can recognize when pressure is coming, but it is often late. The same goes for stunts and twists on the defensive line. With more time and film studying, Suamataia can improve in this area.
He has strong hands that can deal quite the punch, but needs to work on his placing and timing. Suamataia can strike earlier to let him get control of his matchup. He also can get his hands too wide at times, which can allow defenders to disengage quicker.
His pad level can get too high and he loses leverage too often. To keep all his power, he needs to keep a low pad level. In addition to his leverage, he can lose balance and lunges. He needs to keep his balance and leverage to be successful at the next level.
