The 2025 NFL Draft will be a great event for teams to start building for their future. Here is the Josh Simmons NFL Draft Profile.
Position: Offensive Tackle
School: Ohio State
Size: 6-foot-5, 315 pounds
Class: Redshirt Junior
2024 stats: N/A
Simmons was a four-star recruit in the class of 2021 who decided to play for San Diego State. He redshirted in 2021, then started for the Aztecs at right tackle in 2022. Following the 2022 season, Simmons transferred to Ohio State. He started at left tackle in 2023 and helped Ohio State win 11 games that season. Simmons returned in 2024 and improved his play before missing the end of the season with a knee injury. Ohio State went on to win the National Championship.
Following the season, Simmons declared for the 2025 NFL Draft. He is currently projected to be a first-round pick.
Simmons has good athleticism for an offensive tackle. He has good quickness at the start of plays to help give him an advantage early in a rep. Simmons can get to the second level quickly to make blocks in the running game. He can also get on the perimeter well, as he moves well laterally. This lateral mobility and flexibility also helps him block athletic edge rushers. Simmons is one of the better athletes at his position in the class.
His pass protection was impressive, particularly this past season. Simmons showed the ability to protect the blindside well by mirroring pass rushers. He can set a good pocket depth and prevent defenders from beating him around the edge. Simmons also has a solid anchor and can stop power rushers.
While he isn’t the biggest tackle, he has good functional play strength. He can execute his blocks, but also can move defenders in the run game, clearing big holes. What makes it better is that he finished blocks well too. In pass protection, his strength helps him anchor well.
Simmons missed the end of the 2024 season with a knee injury. Teams will have to check out the injury and make sure there are no long-term effects. His injury limited what he could show evaluators as well. Simmons took a huge jump this season before the injury and a larger sample size could’ve helped his stock.
Over his college career, Simmons has been undisciplined and picked up too many penalties. His penalties span from false starts to holding calls, but he needs to be more disciplined, as it limited what his team could do offensively. He seemed to clean up some of his play in 2024 and will need to keep that progress going.
At times, Simmons can lean forward in pass protection. He can get off-balance because of this and needs to stay patient rather than lunge. With his lean, Simmons can be susceptible to inside moves. He’ll need to be careful not to overset and to stay balanced to combat this.
Projected Draft Range: First Round Pick-Second Round Pick
Draft Grade: First Round Pick
