The 2022 NFL Draft will be a great event for teams to start building for their future. Here is the Jelani Woods 2022 NFL Draft Profile.
Jelani Woods Background
Position: Tight End
Size: 6-foot-7, 259 pounds
Class: Redshirt Senior
2021 stats: 44 receptions, 598 receiving yards, 13.6 yards per catch, 8 touchdown catches
Woods had an explosive senior season at Virginia to put him on the map. He is now heading to the 2022 NFL Draft as one of the best tight ends.
As a three-star recruit out of Georgia, Woods signed with Oklahoma State as a high school recruit. As a freshman for the Cowboys, Woods had seven receptions for 120 yards and two touchdowns. He made 16 catches for 112 yards and one touchdown in 2019. Woods returned to Oklahoma State in 2020, posting eight catches for 129 yards and one touchdown. Following the 2020 season, Woods transferred to Virginia to get more production. He stepped up with 44 receptions for 598 yards and eight touchdowns. Woods helped the Cavaliers go 6-6 on the season.
Following his big last season of college football, Woods is headed to the NFL. He is currently projected to be a second to fourth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Jelani Woods Strengths
Simply put, Woods is huge. He stands at 6-foot-7 and 259 pounds, which easily makes him one of the biggest tight ends in the class. Woods also has long 34 1/8-inch arms, making his frame massive. He has a big catch radius and will be a matchup problem because of his size.
Woods is a red zone threat who can really convert when the field gets tight. He had eight touchdowns in 2021 and because he is a bigger tight end, has a matchup advantage. Quarterbacks can throw it up and Woods is more than capable of coming down with the ball.
For his size, Woods actually has pretty good speed. He ran a 4.61 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine and that speed shows up on tape. When linebackers get matched up with him, they may have a hard time matching his speed.
Jelani Woods Weaknesses
Woods has the size to be a good blocker, but needs to improve his technique. He can keep his leverage and work on using his hands better. When he gets to the NFL he will have to work on becoming a better blocker to become a more well-rounded tight end.
His route-running could also use some work. He has good physicality in his routes, but he struggles to get in and out of his breaks quickly. If he runs crisper routes, he can gain better separation. The separation he gets on jump balls is nice, but he can be a more quarterback-friendly target with more fine-tuned route-running.
While he is tough to tackle because he is big, he doesn’t have great run after the catch ability. He has some linear speed, but doesn’t have much wiggle. When a quarterback targets Woods, they should expect the play to be over relatively soon after the catch.
Projected Draft Range: Second Round Pick-Fourth Round Pick
