Kinlaw has played for the Gamecocks for three seasons and has really stepped his game up over the last two years. He played well this year, but South Carolina didn’t have the talent around him to make a run at a bowl game, even if they did upset Georgia. He will now get a chance for a head start on draft preparation.

A four-star recruit out of high school according to 247 Sports, Kinlaw went to JUCO for a season before enrolling at South Carolina. He was a sophomore and immediately saw the field for the Gamecocks with 17 total tackles and two tackles for loss. Kinlaw took a huge jump in his junior season with 30 total tackles, nine tackles for loss and four sacks. For his senior season, he played well again with 35 total tackles, six tackles for loss and six sacks.

He has plenty of good tape and NFL teams will be considering selecting him early in the 2020 NFL Draft. Kinlaw will want to test well to retain his draft stock from a solid senior season.

Strengths

Javon Kinlaw

Kinlaw looks the part of a defensive lineman. He is 6-foot-6 and 310 pounds, which is after he lost weight once he stepped on South Carolina’s campus. His height and his length help him win battles on the interior. Kinlaw’s length helps him shed blockers and his height helps out when he bats down passses at the line of scrimmage.

He has great quickness that starts at the snap of the ball. Kinlaw was very quick at getting off the line of scrimmage when the play starts. After that, he uses his quickness and athleticism to win his matchups. Against big players on the interior, his quickness could be a game-changer.

His hands are another one of his best assets. Kinlaw has strong hands that he uses well to shed blockers. As soon as he jumps at the snap of the ball, his hands go into action, striking his blocker. He is usually able to set them back to start the play because of his combination of quickness and fast hands.

Weaknesses

Kinlaw’s motor will be looked at a lot by NFL scouts. It is inconsistent, as some plays he will go through multiple blockers to make a play and others, he is taken out of the play by one blocker. If he can show consistent effort, he will be a much better player.

He is good at using his quickness at the start of the play, but sometimes it gets him out of position. Kinlaw can get too far upfield at times. At other times, he can be fooled by misdirection, reverses and screens. his first defensive line coach in the NFL will have to work with him to make sure he is more disciplined.

While he is one of the best interior pass rushers in the class, he can add more moves to his arsenal and refine some of the ones he already has. He has shown a good swim move, but he can be really effective when he has more one on one matchups in the NFL.
