Over the last two seasons, Sanders has stepped up and been a playmaker for Texas. Now he is in the 2024 NFL Draft.
As a five-star recruit in the class of 2021, Sanders decided to stay in state and play for the Longhorns. He didn’t do much as a freshman, but then really showed off as a sophomore. Sanders caught 54 passes for 613 yards and five touchdowns. His play helped Texas win eight games. In 2023, Sanders continued to play well with 45 receptions for 682 yards and two touchdowns. He was a key part of the offense that led Texas to the College Football Playoff.
Following the CFP appearance, Sanders declared for the 2024 NFL Draft. He is currently projected to be a day two pick.
Ja’Tavion Sanders Strengths
Sanders is an athletic tight end. He has good quickness at the start of a play, which turns into good long speed. Sanders also has good agility. He has plus-body control and is able to make catches outside of his frame because of it. It will be hard for linebackers to cover Sanders due to his athleticism.
He has the ability to run after the catch very well. Sanders uses his speed and agility to dodge tacklers after the catch. He can elude tacklers, but also can run through them. Sanders has good vision in the open field and can pick up huge chunks of yardage because of it.
His hands are very reliable. He can make the easy catches that are on target. Sanders has shown to be able to make catches that are outside of his frame with good body control. He can make contested catches as well. Not only are his hands great, but he also has a big catch radius to utilize because he has decent height and leaping ability.
Ja’Tavion Sanders Weaknesses
He will not be the biggest tight en in the class. Sanders stands at 6-foot-4 and 243 pounds. He will need to add strength to his frame in order to be a more complete tight end. While he has a big catch radius, measuring in shorter than his listed height could get some questions to start.
Partially due to his size, Sanders is just an average blocker. He is good blocking in space, but struggles blocking as an in-line tight end. Adding strength can help, but he also can show better technique with his leverage and hand placement.
Sanders is a decent route-runner, but can pay more attention to detail in this area. He can be too tall getting in and out of his breaks, which limits his ability to create separation. Sanders has solid agility and with some work can really improve in this area to be harder to match up with in the NFL.
