The 2023 NFL Draft will be a great event for teams to start building for their future. Here is the Jaelyn Duncan 2023 NFL Draft Profile.
Position: Offensive Tackle
School: Maryland
Size: 6-foot-6, 306 pounds
Class: Redshirt Senior
2022 Stats: Honorable Mention All-Big Ten
Duncan spent five seasons at Maryland honing his craft and getting ready for the next level. He is now in the 2023 NFL Draft.
As a five-star prospect out of Maryland, Duncan decided to stay in-state to play for the Terrapins. He redshirted his first season on campus before jumping into the starting lineup at left tackle in 2019. The Terps struggled with a 3-9 record. In 2020, Duncan was an Honorable Mention All-Big Ten selection at left tackle. Maryland went 2-3 in a COVID-shortened season. For the 2021 season, Duncan started 11 of 13 games at left tackle. He helped Maryland improve to 7-6 in 2021. For the 2022 season, Duncan was once again an Honorable Mention All-Big Ten Selection at left tackle. He led Maryland to an 8-5 record and a win in Duke’s Mayo Bowl.
After winning the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, Duncan declared for the 2023 NFL Draft. He is a projected mid-round pick.
He has solid size for an NFL offensive tackle. Duncan stands 6-foot-6 and 303 pounds, which is decent for the next level. To go with his size, Duncan has decent length with 33 5/8-inch arms. His length can help neutralize defenders.
Duncan has great athleticism for an offensive tackle. He shows good quickness and lateral mobility. Duncan also has good flexibility. All of these allow him to handle athletic edge rushers and get to the second level to complete blocks on run plays. He is also good at pulling.
His ability to mirror pass rushers is impressive. He uses his good athleticism to stay in front of edge rushers. When they try to beat him outside, he is able to move, but he is also able to move inside to stop rushers when they make inside moves.
While he has decent size, he needs to find a way to add more strength, because that isn’t present in his game. He struggles to sustain blocks and move defenders out of the way as a run blocker. As a pass blocker, he can struggle against power rushers, as he struggles to anchor.
Duncan can work on his hand usage to find betters success as well. His hands can get too wide, which allows defenders to use their length against him. He needs to keep his hands inside and show more power with them to hold defenders at bay.
With his struggles vs. power, Duncan might be a better fit for zone schemes. He can find success there, but he might be a scheme-specific prospect. That means it will limit the number of teams who will take him in the draft.
Projected Draft Range: Third Round Pick-Fifth Round Pick
Draft Grade: Third-Round Pick
