The 2025 NFL Draft will be a great event for teams to start building for their future. Here is the Jack Sawyer NFL Draft Profile.
Position: Edge Rusher
School: Ohio State
Size: 6-foot-4, 260 pounds
Class: Senior
2024 stats: 59 total tackles, 9 tackles for loss, 9 sacks, 7 passes defended, 3 forced fumbles, 3 fumble recoveries, 1 interception, 2 touchdowns
Sawyer was a five-star recruit in the class of 2021 who decided to stay in-state to play for the Buckeyes. He played a little bit as a freshman, registering 13 total tackles, three tackles for loss and three sacks. His role increased in 2022, as he tallied 24 total tackles, seven tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. His play helped Ohio State win 11 games and make the CFP. In 2023, he racked up 48 total tackles, 10 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks. He aided the Buckeyes in winning 11 games again that season. For the 2024 season, Sawyer had 59 total tackles, nine tackles for loss and nine sacks. He led the team to a national championship in his final season.
Following the national championship, Sawyer has been preparing for the 2025 NFL Draft. He is a projected day-two pick.
Sawyer has done a great job in run defense during his college career. He can shed blocks decently well and then finds the ball quickly. Sawyer can set the edge and anchor well, which helps his teammates get to the football. When he is able to shed, he shows good pursuit and effort to bring down ball carriers.
His motor is relentless and has helped him win, even when he is outmatched from a physical perspective. If his initial pass rush is stalled, he keeps working towards the quarterback with good secondary effort and actually sees some production from that. Against the run, he shows great pursuit and does not give up on plays.
He is a smart player in a few different ways. Sawyer understands blocking schemes in front of him and knows how to attack them. He shows good play diagnosis and can go find the football really quickly. Sawyer does the little things to help his teammates like setting the edge against the run and staying active as a pass rusher.
Sawyer has good size, but lacks length. His arms are measured at under 32 inches. This puts him at a severe disadvantage against almost every offensive lineman he will go against at the next level. There are times when he struggles to shed because of his lack of length. His technique and hand work will have to be better to help him win at the next level.
He wins as a pass rushers because he is a decent athlete with good strength and a solid motor. Sawyer can be a more effective pass rusher if he adds more moves and counters to his game. Especially given his lack of length, he needs to improve his moves to help him get past offensive linemen more often.
While he had a good career that culminated in a national championship, his production was inconsistent. He got hot during the CFP this past season, but had mundane production outside of that. Sawyer can provide a good run defender, but those looking for consistent pass rush production may not find it with Sawyer.
