Nussmeier was a four-star recruit in the class of 2021 who signed with LSU out of Texas. He redshirted in his first season and played as a reserve through 2023. Nussmeier stepped into the starting lineup in 2024, impressing with 4,052 passing yards, 29 touchdowns, 12 interceptions on 64.2 percent completion. He led the team to a nine-win season. Nussmeier was injured in 2025 and his stats suffered. He passed for 1,927 yards, 12 touchdowns and five interceptions on 67.4 percent completion. LSU struggled as Nussmeier played through injury and ultimately played nine games.
Following the season, Nussmeier has been preparing for the 2026 NFL Draft. He is currently projected to be a mid-round pick.
Nussmeier has great accuracy that improved as the years went on in college. He completed 67.4 percent of his passes in 2025, while playing injured. His accuracy goes to all three levels of the field. On short throws, he gives receivers plenty of room to run after the catch by placing the ball well. For second-level throws, he can layer them in between linebackers and defensive backs. He also has a solid deep ball.
He is a smart quarterback as the son of a coach. Nussmeier is able to recognize how defenses will attack him pre-snap and make adjustments. He can go through his progressions and at times looks off defenders. Nussmeier moves well in the pocket, even if he isn’t the best athlete, to avoid sacks.
While it didn’t show up as much on his 2025 tape due to his injury, Nussmeier has solid arm talent. He can fit balls into tight windows by getting some velocity on the ball. On deep balls, he can get some air under the ball and push it down the field to give his receivers a chance. He won’t wow anyone with his arm talent, but he can make plenty of NFL-level throws.
His size and durability will raise some concerns. He is just 6-foot-1 5/8 inches and 203 pounds, which is under the prototypical size for the position. Nussmeier also doesn’t have the athleticism to avoid some hits, which exacerbates his size. He was injured in 2025 and played through it, but that will flag some durability concerns as well.
He can maneuver around the pocket decently, but Nussmeier is a limited athlete who won’t make plays out of structure. Nussmeier won’t be a player who can do designed runs very often. When the rush crashes in, Nussmeier can elude it for a second, but he can fail to get out of the pocket at times.
Nussmeier is a gunslinger, which has its pros and cons. He can create big plays because of his willingness to take risks, but he can also turn the ball over a bit. Nussmeier will force throws too much, trying to fit them into tight windows. He’ll have to make sure the ball is protected to be trusted.
Projected Draft Range: Third Round Pick-Fifth Round Pick
Draft Grade: Third Round Pick
