Devon Achane 2023 NFL Draft Profile

Publish Date: April 24, 2023

The 2023 NFL Draft will be a great event for teams to start building for their future. Here is the Devon Achane 2023 NFL Draft Profile.

Devon Achane Background

Position: Running Back

School: Texas A&M

Size: 5-foot-8 1/2, 188 pounds

Class: Junior

2022 Stats: 196 carries, 1,102 rushing yards, 8 rushing touchdowns, 5.6 yards per rush, 36 receptions, 196 receiving yards, 3 touchdown receptions, 5.4 yards per catch

Achane improved in all three seasons he spent at Texas A&M, developing well. Now he is in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Out of high school, Achane was rated four stars and stayed in Texas to play for the Aggies. Achane rushed for 364 yards and four touchdowns in his true freshman season. He was more featured as a sophomore, rushing for 910 yards and nine touchdowns. He added 261 receiving yards and a touchdown catch. His play helped the Aggies go 8-4 on the season. In 2022, he tallied 1,102 rushing yards, 196 receiving yards and 11 total touchdowns. Despite Achane’s good play, Texas A&M struggled with a 5-7 record.

Following his third season at Texas A&M, Achane declared for the 2023 NFL Draft. He is projected to be a day-two pick.

Devon Achane Strengths

Achane has plenty of speed and quickness to offer an NFL team. He has good long speed to rip off long runs and that speed was confirmed at the NFL Combine. In addition to the speed, Achane also has good quickness and can get to his top speed very fast. He also has good agility as well. Achane is a good athlete.

He has plenty of experience as a receiver. Achane is able to run good routes and also runs a solid route tree. Texas A&M even lined him up in the slot. He has decent hands and once the ball is in his hands, he can run after the catch. Achane will provide some third-down value to an NFL team.

His vision is solid. He is able to run between the tackles and finds the holes well. When he sees an open space he runs to it. In the open field, he knows how to run in order to elude defenders. He is a creative runner who is very non-linear because he uses his vision, especially in the open field.

Devon Achane Weaknesses

Achane is undersized for a running back. He is 5-foot-8 and 1/2 and 188 pounds. With his size, he should not be used as a short-yardage back, as he can struggle to push the pile and break tackles. If he can add more play strength that doesn’t hinder his speed that could help make him a more durable player.

With his size playing a factor, Achane doesn’t provide much pass protection. He could square up players better, but ultimately it would be hard for him to improve without adding strength. While he can be in on third downs as a receiver, the pass protection could leave him off the field.

There are times when his runs can take too much time. He gets too cute with his runs instead of just accelerating and hitting the hole. Achane sometimes jukes too much instead of just turning on his speed and running by defenders.

Projected Draft Range: Second Round Pick-Third Round Pick

Draft Grade: Second-Round Pick
