Demetric Felton Background

Position: Running Back

Size: 5-foot-9, 189 pounds

Class: Redshirt Senior

2020 stats: 668 rushing yards, 5 rushing touchdowns, 22 catches, 159 receiving yards, 3 touchdowns

Felton played both wide receiver and running back in college and was successful. He is now a prospect for the 2021 NFL Draft.

The California product decided to stay in-state as a four-star prospect and go to UCLA. As a freshman, Felton had 75 rushing yards and -2 receiving yards. In his second season, he had 27 rushing yards and 207 receiving yards. Felton really stepped into a hybrid role during his junior season. He finished the season with 331 rushing yards, 594 receiving yards and five total touchdowns. Unfortunately, UCLA struggled with a 4-8 record. As a senior, Felton had 668 rushing yards and 159 receiving yards with eight total touchdowns. His play couldn’t help UCLA get to a bowl game, as they finished with a 3-4 season.

After time spent as a running back and wide receiver, Felton can best be described as an offensive weapon. He is currently projected to be a third to fifth round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Strengths

Felton’s greatest strength is his verastility. Teams will be able to use him as a running back, slot receiver or even outside receiver on occassion. He can be used on screens, jet sweeps and just about any play imaginable that is designed to get the ball into his hands quickly. Offensive coordinators will be able to use him as a chess piece and would be best served moving him around on offense to keep defenses guessing. He also can be used as a returner.

He is a dynamic player once the ball is in his hands. Felton has good vision in the open field and runs to open space. When a defender gets near him, he is very slippery and is able to wiggle around them to maximize each play. He runs hard with the ball in his hands, which also makes him tough to tackle. Teams will need to design plays to get the ball to him early in the play and then let him make defenders miss in the open field.

His quickness and agility help him in a variety of ways. Not only does it make him a menace in the open field, he also gets the play started off right and can cut back at the line of scrimmage. While his route running could use some work, his quickness and agility are tools that can be used to run better routes with more experience.

Weaknesses

Whether teams plan to use him at running back or wide receiver, Felton needs to improve as a route-runner. He has the quickness and footwork to be able to run crisper routes, but needs to spend more time on it. In additoin to fine-tuning his route running, Felton could stand to add more routes to his route tree.

His size could be an issue for him in the NFL. He is 5-foot-9 and 189 pounds, which is small for both a running back and a wide receiver. Felton may need to add some play strength if he can keep his quickness with it. Because he runs so hard, he takes a lot of hits, so adding some weight to his frame could help him be more durable in the NFL.

If used as a running back, he is not a good option to run in between the tackles or near the goal line. His role may be limited to third down back, where he can utilize his pass catching abilities. Felton can try to add power to his game and improve his vision on runs in between the tackles to try and be an every down running back.
