The 2025 NFL Draft will be a great event for teams to start building for their future. Here is the Colston Loveland NFL Draft Profile.
Position: Tight End
School: Michigan
Size: 6-foot-5, 245 pounds
Class: Junior
2024 stats: 56 receptions, 582 receiving yards, 5 touchdown catches, 10.4 yards per catch, 1 rush, -2 rushing yards
As a four-star recruit in the class of 2022, Loveland signed with Michigan out of Idaho. He played a decent amount as a freshman, registering 16 catches for 235 yards and two touchdowns. His play helped the Wolverines make the College Football Playoff that season. He had a larger role in 2023, catching 45 passes for 649 yards and four touchdowns. He led the team to a National Championship in 2023. Loveland had another good season in 2024 with 56 receptions for 582 yards and five touchdowns. Michigan had a dip in 2024, as they won eight games.
Following the season, Loveland declared for the 2025 NFL Draft. Loveland is a projected first or second-round pick.
Loveland is a good athlete for a prospective NFL tight end. He has good acceleration at the start of the play and can build up to a pretty good top speed. That speed can help him attack the seams of a defense. He also has good agility and body control. His body control and leaping ability can help him high-point the football and make catches off of his frame.
When the ball is in his hands Loveland is a threat to the defense. He has good acceleration after the catch and then uses his vision to find open space to run to. Loveland can maximize yardage on plays by taking short passes a long way. He runs hard and can be hard for defensive backs to tackle.
His route-running is also impressive for a tight end. He has the ability to get in and out of his breaks quickly in order to create separation from man coverage. His ability to find the soft spot against zone coverage is also solid. Loveland ran a decent number of routes at Michigan giving him a decent route tree to work with at the next level.
Loveland was listed at 6-foot-5 and 245 at Michigan. It looks like he can fill out his frame a little better to give him more play strength. His measurements at the NFL Combine will be intriguing, as he showed the ability to line up on the line of scrimmage and out wide in college, but that versatility may not be available to him if he doesn’t fill out his frame more.
Partially because of his relative lack of strength, Loveland isn’t the greatest blocker for the position. He needs to keep his pad level low and his hands inside to improve his technique. Keeping his leverage will help him sustain his blocks better and could allow him to turn blocking into a strength.
While he normally has solid hands, there are some drops on his tape. He seemed to clean a lot of that up in 2024, but still needs to eliminate focus drops to be a more reliable target for his quarterback. His improvement is a good sign and he needs to continue working on it at the next level.
