Carter was a five-star recruit in the class of 2021, who signed with Clemson out of Georgia. He played a little bit as a freshman, registering 16 total tackles. His role increased in 2022 with Barrett delivering 73 total tackles, 11 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks. He helped the team get 11 wins that season. For the 2023 season, he registered 62 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. Carter aided the team in winning nine games during the 2023 season. In 2024, Carter racked up 82 tackles, 11 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. He led the teams to 10 wins and an appearance in the CFP.
Following the season, Carter has been preparing for the 2025 NFL Draft. He is currently projected to be a day-two pick.
Carter is a good athlete for the linebacker position. He has good quickness and can build up to a solid top speed. Carter also has the ability to change directions well. He has solid flexibility too. Carter’s movements will make him one of the more athletic players at his position in the class.
He is extremely useful in coverage. Carter has the athleticism to match up with both tight ends and running backs in man-to-man coverage, as he is able to mirror them. He also plays good zone coverage, using his eyes well and showing great range once the ball is in the air. Carter is a three-down linebacker.
His added value is from his ability to blitz. Carter is able to get home because of his athleticism and quickness, as offensive linemen are unable to keep up with him. In addition to being a good blitzer, Carter has great potential as a quarterback spy, as he has the ability to run with some of the more mobile quarterbacks in the NFL.
Carter added weight this last season to fill out his frame, but he still is undersized. He is 6-foot and 231 pounds. While he has added strength, he still can be overpowered. He can struggle to shed blocks, but does have over 32-inch arms to use to his advantage. This can also make it harder for him to match up with bigger tight ends in coverage.
Getting through blocks can sometimes give Carter trouble. Whether he needs to shed or evade blocks, Carter can struggle to get through them. He can improve his hand work to help him shed quicker. Carter can also get through traffic quicker to avoid blocks and free himself up to make more plays.
His struggles to shed and get through blocks limit his ability as a run defender. On top of that, he doesn’t always take the best angles to the football in pursuit. His athleticism allows him to pursue quickly, but he could make more tackles if he would take the correct angle to the football.
