Andrew Thomas 2020 NFL Draft Profile

The 2020 NFL Draft will be a great event for teams to start building for their future and The Game Haus will be doing scouting reports on some of the top prospects. Here is the Andrew Thomas 2020 NFL Draft profile.

Background

Position: Offensive Tackle

Size: 6-foot-5, 320 pounds

Class: Junior

2019 stats: 2019 First-Team All-American (ESPN)

Thomas has started on Georgia’s offensive line for three seasons, making him a very experienced player in this draft class. His play over his three years at Georgia has made him one of the top offensive tackle prospects in the 2020 NFL Draft.

As a freshman, Thomas started every game at right tackle with Georgia winning in the Rose Bowl, but losing in the National Championship Game to Alabama to finish the season. He moved to left tackle as a sophomore and stayed there for the rest of his career. His blocking helped the Bulldogs win 11 games in 2018. The Bulldogs had national championship hopes for 2019, but had to settle for a 12-win season and a win in the Sugar Bowl, a game which Thomas sat out to prepare for the NFL Draft.

Thomas left school with his value still sky-high. It is a good offensive tackle class, but Thomas will likely still be selected very early in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Strengths

Andrew Thomas

His greatest strength is his power. Thomas will not get overpowered by many defensive linemen. In the passing game, pass rushers have to find a way around him to beat him, as they can’t go through him. When Georgia ran the ball, he was able to move bodies very well.

Because of his power, Thomas is a great run blocker. As mentioned, he can move his man out of the way to clear a hole on a very consistent basis. He rarely lets his man beat him and make a play on the ball, which helped Georgia run the ball well over his career.

Thomas has very good hands, which are among the best in the draft class. They are very strong and he places his hands well. He punches well and has great timing. When he needs to, Thomas can extend his arms and hold off his opponent.

Weaknesses

His footwork will need to be improved for the next level. He has quick enough feet, but he takes some missteps. When someone wins on the edge against him, he doesn’t move his feet to get in front, but rather tries to use his upper body strength to slow them down.

He doesn’t have a lot of flexibility, which could give him problems with pass rushers in the NFL. Pass rushers who can bend and get around the edge could make things tough and win against him. With bigger, less flexible pass rushers he will be fine, but he’ll have to learn how to deal with the ones who don’t fit that mold.

While Thomas is a good run blocker, getting to the second level can sometimes give him problems. He has decent mobility, but linebackers have a lot of success avoiding him because they are much faster. This could limit the number of big plays his offense can produce.

Projected Draft Range: Top 15 Pick
