Why the Golden State Warriors Should Sign T.J. Warren

Publish Date: August 30, 2023

The Golden State Warriors have two standard roster spots open, and there are still many solid free agents available that they could sign. Veterans such as Bismack Biyombo or Danny Green may come to mind or younger starting-caliber players like Christian Wood or Kelly Oubre Jr. could also be reliable options. However, one free agent that the Golden State Warriors should sign is T.J. Warren.

T.J. Warren’s Valuable Skillset

Warren has struggled to stay healthy in recent years because of multiple stress fractures in his left foot. He only played four games during the 2021 season and missed the entire 2022 season. After two years of rehab, Warren made his return in December 2022 and played 42 total games with the Brooklyn Nets and Phoenix Suns last season. Before all the injuries and rehab, Warren broke out in the 2019 and 2020 seasons and averaged around 19 points per game (PPG) on 40 percent from the 3-point line with the Phoenix Suns and Indiana Pacers.

The question with Warren is not whether he can still play at a high level, but whether he can stay healthy. When healthy Warren is a capable defender and a reliable three-point shooter at the forward positions. That is something the Warriors greatly lacked last season behind Andrew Wiggins. Otto Porter Jr. and Nemanja Bjelica were perfect in the Warriors’ 2022 championship run with their floor spacing and length. Warren would fill a similar, much-needed role at the forward positions.

The Warriors Have Some Roster Flexibility

The return of Andrew Wiggins and the breakout of Jonathan Kuminga could lessen the need for Warren’s services. Nonetheless, having that size and depth off the bench would prove valuable if injuries plague the Warriors again during the regular season. Warren could also use his time with the Warriors to continue getting healthier and demonstrate his value as a player who can help win championships.

The Warriors have some important decisions to make with their last two standard roster spots. It’s important that they find the right players so that they can have quality insurance and depth when injury issues arise. Because of Warren’s versatility and 3-point shooting, he should be who the Golden State Warriors target as 2023 NBA training camp draws near.
