With NBA opening night right around the corner, the Golden State Warriors re-sign Jordan Poole and Andrew Wiggins. Here’s an overview of the two players, as well as details of each deal.
Jordan Poole
On October 15, 2022, Jordan Poole signed a four-year, up to $140 million extension with the Golden State Warriors. The 23-year-old was a significant part of the team’s scoring last year, averaging 18.5 points per game, 4 assists per game, and 3.4 rebounds per game. Poole shot 92.5% from the line last season, leading the league in free throw percentage.
Nicknamed “Poole Party”, Poole has increased his scoring each season he’s played with the Warriors and will clearly continue to bring energy to the Warriors squad. Last year, the shooting guard was fourth place in the NBA’s Most Improved Player Award voting.
Andrew Wiggins
The Warriors and Andrew Wiggins agreed to a four-year, $109 million deal on the same day that Poole re-signed. Wiggins, the number one pick in the 2014 NBA draft, put up similar stats to Poole last year. With an average of 17.2 points per game, 2.2 assists per game, and 4.5 rebounds per game, he well justifies such a large contract.
Wiggins spent the first five seasons of his career with the Minnesota Timberwolves before joining the Warriors in 2020. Back in 2017, he averaged 23.6 points per game with the Timberwolves. Locking in the 2015 Rookie of the Year is a big move for the Warriors, as he’s still young and is a reliable scorer.
Warriors Roster
Other than Poole and Wiggins, the Warriors have signed a few new players including Donte DiVincenzo and JaMychal Green. They’ve also re-signed Kevon Looney. The Warriors lost numerous bench players and a couple of starters including Gary Payton II, Otto Porter Jr., Juan Toscano-Anderson, Damion Lee, and Nemanja Bjelica.
The overall Warriors roster looks strong, with Poole in the backcourt along with Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and DiVincenzo. The frontcourt, with Wiggins, will include James Wiseman, Draymond Green, Kevon Looney, and Jonathan Kuminga.
Final Thoughts
The re-signing of Poole and Wiggins is a great offseason move for the Warriors. With Curry and Thompson at 34 years old and 32 years old respectively, the Warriors need young players who will stay loyal to the team. Signing Poole and Wiggins to long extensions gives the Warriors both talent in their current roster and promise in years to come. The future looks hopeful for the defending NBA champs.
