Washington spent one season at Kentucky honing his craft. After his freshman season, he decided to declare for the 2022 NBA Draft.
Out of high school, Washington was a five-star prospect who chose to leave his state of Arizona to play for Kentucky. He started for the Wildcats as a freshman, averaging 12.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game. His play helped the Wildcats get a no. 2 seed in the 2022 NCAA Tournament, but the team fell to St. Peter’s in the first round.
Following the disappointing ending to the season, Washington declared for the draft. He is currently projected to be a mid-first-round pick.
Washington can be a three-level scorer at the next level. He can finish at the rim over bigger defenders, or if the defense collapses, he can hit floaters. His ability to hit mid-range jumpers was apparent at Kentucky. From behind the arc, Washington shot 35 percent, with some streakiness, but he has a solid stroke that can improve at the next level.
He can play on or off-ball for an NBA team. Although he went to Kentucky as a point guard, he mostly played shooting guard. He learned how to move without the ball and to be proficient in catch-and-shoot situations. When he was asked to handle the ball, he did so smartly and can run an offense.
His passing ability is also there. Even though he didn’t have the ball in his hands a lot, he averaged 3.9 assists. He can operate the pick and roll because he reads defenses well. His ability to drive and kick it to an open man gets his teammates open shots. Whether he is playing point guard or shooting guard, he sees the floor very well and doesn’t have too many turnovers.
For someone playing off the ball so much in college, Washington doesn’t have great size. At 6-foot-3, he could have decent size for a point guard if that is where he is played, but guarding some of the bigger guards and forwards at the NBA level could give him some problems. When players with good length guard him, it could also work against him.
While he is a smooth operator, he isn’t necessarily an explosive athlete. He doesn’t have the quickest first step and won’t impress with consistent highlight-reel dunks. Washington has enough athleticism to get the job done, especially with his basketball IQ, but he may be at an athletic disadvantage in some matchups.
At Kentucky, Washington did disappear in some games. There were plenty of games where he scored in single digits. Some of his worst outings included St. Peter’s (five points), Kansas (two points), Florida (six points), Notre Dame (six points) and LSU (five points). During some of those games he was dealing with an ankle injury, but there were also games where he would be healthy and he would disappear. He needs to be more aggressive and consistent from game to game at the next level.
Projected Draft Range: Mid-First-Round Pick
