The 2023 NBA Draft takes place on Thursday, June 22, as both rounds are wrapped up in one night. As it approaches, TGH will be taking a quick look some teams’ draft strategies, and shedding some light on what direction they will go with their picks.. Here is the Toronto Raptors NBA Draft profile for 2023.
Summary
Toronto made the Play-In Tournament in 2023, but failed to qualify for the postseason despite leading the Bulls by 19 at one point in the game. Their final record was an even 41-41, which was fifth in the Atlantic Division and ninth in the Eastern Conference. Following the disappointing end to their 2022-2023 campaign, the Raptors fired head coach Nick Nurse, who helped win the Raptors their only NBA Championship.
2023 Draft Picks
The Raptors have one pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.
First Round (one pick):
- Pick #13
Team Needs
- Offense
- Wing and frontcourt defense
- Backup point guard
Projected Targets
Pick #13: Cason Wallace, G, Kentucky
More than a few draft profiles insist that while Wallace may never be an out-and-out star in the NBA, they also agree that he’ll be a starter in relatively quick order. That’s what the Raptors could need, especially if Fred VanVleet becomes an unrestricted free agent.
Wallace can fill it up from deep, catch-and-shoot and also create his own shot, the latter of which is invaluable for a point guard. He’s an elite perimeter defender, which will likely carry over to the league, and is sneaky athletic. He’ll need to iron out his overall efficiency, and look to become more pass happy with Toronto. But if he gets on a roll distributing the ball, he’ll create more open looks for himself, as well.
