Timberwolves Set to Begin Coaching Search

Davion MooreBy Davion MooreMay 15, 20192 Mins Read

The Minnesota Timberwolves are looking for a fresh start. According to reports, the Timberwolves are ready to start their search for a head coach.

Earlier this month, the Timberwolves hired Gersson Rosas as their President of Basketball Operations. Rosas previously worked with the Houston Rockets. He started his stint with the Rockets as a Video Coordinator and worked his way up to Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations. He left the team after 16 seasons to join the Timberwolves.

Rosas has a list of candidates for the Timberwolves’ next coach. Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Miami Heat assistant Juwan Howard is one of the candidates for the position. Howard also interviewed for the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers head coaching job, however, both positions went to other candidates. The Cavs job went to John Beilein and the Lakers job went to Frank Vogel. The Timberwolves job could be Howard’s opportunity to get his first head coaching job.

The Timberwolves will interview Portland Trailblazers assistant David Vanterpool. Vanterpool also interviewed for the Cavaliers and the Suns positions. His team is in the Conference finals, but he and Rosas are expected to meet later this week. Howard and Vanterpool are primary candidates, but the Wolves are also looking at other candidates.

The Timberwolves have other candidates in mind. The Wolves have permission to interview New Orleans  Pelicans assistant Chris Finch.

The Wolves are also considering Darvin Ham of the Milwaukee Bucks. The Timberwolves have a list of candidates, but they will also consider their interim head coach Ryan Saunders. Saunders coached the Wolves after they parted ways with Tom Thibodeau. The Timberwolves went 17-25 under Saunders. There is a chance Saunders retains the job, but the Timberwolves are keeping their options open.

The Timberwolves finished last season 36-46. They have a young core in Karl Anthony-Towns and Andrew Wiggins. The Timberwolves are a team trying to become (consistently) playoff bound. The right coach is a step in the right direction. If the Timberwolves find their ideal coach, they can finally start building the team they desire.
