The Future Of Grant Williams In A Celtics Uniform

Grant Williams was a vital part of the Celtics’ run to the Finals last season. This season, however, he has had a very split role going from a big-minute rotational player to sitting out big games against Cleveland and Atlanta. What does Grant Williams’ future behold as a Celtics player? Will he search for another team this offseason?

Williams has seen a smaller impact on games since his two missed clutch free throws against Cleveland on March 6. Williams shot the ball well against the Cavs, shooting 4/5 from 3. The two free throws ultimately decided Coach Joe Mazzulla’s opinion to give him limited time in a blow-out against Portland. The next game against Atlanta was a bit closer end to end, which saw Williams benched.

Williams demanded a lengthy and pricey contract, aiming for $20 a year for at least four years. Of course, Williams is a great player but the Celtics didn’t see eye-to-eye on the price tag of the young forward, and contract talks will most likely stretch into this upcoming offseason; this gives Williams the option to move into a bigger role if offered.

Boston did offer Williams a $50 million four-year contract which he denied, seeking more. Some speculate this move will foreshadow Williams’s imminent leave after the season. However, it’s not quite clear what his future holds.

The forward from Tennessee has averaged 8.2 points per game, 4.7 rebounds per game, and under two assists per game. Surprisingly, Williams has improved every aspect of his game from the previous season excluding blocks per game and shooting percentage. He has never averaged double-digit points or above five rebounds.

In games that Williams has played 20 minutes or less, the Celtics have lost 9 out of 15 games. This goes to show that maybe Williams isn’t completely to blame for the Celtics’ shortcomings.

Williams brings an almost 40% 3-point percentage and incredible defense, but his woes of low scoring and inconsistency could pose problems for a re-signing. Some nights Williams brings solid defense and a few key 3-pointers, but some nights he gets in foul trouble early and shoots poorly.

Will the Celtics find the money he desires or will he search elsewhere for the money or role on another team after this season concludes? The power lies almost completely in Williams’ hands.
