The Los Angeles Lakers fell to 0-3 after a frustrating loss to the Portland Trail Blazers, Sunday afternoon. As the team continues to struggle, Russell Westbrook trade rumors have reignited.
Last season’s disastrous results were blamed primarily on Westbrook. Whether the blame was fair or not, he has had to live with the fallout of it. The offseason was filled with trade rumors and speculation.
Now that the regular season is in full swing, the blame for the disappointing start is being placed on Westbrook. The nine-time All-Star is also once again at the center of multiple trade rumors.
The most highly discussed trade rumor for Westbrook this off-season was with the Indiana Pacers. The proposed trade package centered around Buddy Hield and Myles Turner going to Los Angeles in exchange for Westbrook and the team’s 2027 and 2029 first-round draft picks. Less than two weeks into the season, and this rumor has gained traction once again.
During the off-season, the Lakers discussed a three or four-team trade with the Charlotte Hornets, which would send Westbrook to Charlotte in exchange for Terry Rozier. The Hornets are off to a much better start than expected, which has reignited some interest in the trade. Rozier is a career 37.6% shooter, which could be very helpful for the Lakers who are struggling with shooting.
The San Antonio Spurs were also an option being discussed for Westbrook during the off-season. After the Spurs traded star Dejounte Murray to the Atlanta Hawks, the prospect of them getting Westbrook began to dwindle.
Spurs veteran guard Josh Richardson has begun to turn heads so far this season. He is averaging 12.7 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game. His performance so far this season has reignited the Lakers interest in sending Westbrook to San Antonio.
Westbrook’s time with the Lakers has been nothing short of disappointing, but it seems the front office is not quite ready to give up on this group. According to Shams Charania, the Lakers want to get at least 20-25 games out of this group before making any serious trade decisions. They want to see how other teams and players are performing before going through with any trades.
