Point guard Russell Westbrook will exercise his $47.1 million player option for the 2022-2023 season to return to the Lakers. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowksi reported the news.
Westbrook, 33, was traded to the Lakers before the 2021-2022 season. He averaged 18.5 points, 7.4 rebounds and 7.1 assists on 44.4 percent shooting.
The move means a roster move may be necessary. Los Angeles has been
rumored to be in the market for other point guards such as Kyrie Irving. After missing the playoffs last season, the Lakers will look to improve the roster and change that next season.
With the move the Lakers are currently $53 million over the salary cap.
In his career, Russell Westbrook has won the MVP, made nine All-Star Games and was a two-time scoring champ. He has averaged a triple-double in three different seasons during his career. Before Los Angeles, he played for Washington, Houston and Oklahoma City.
