Cleveland Cavaliers guard Ricky Rubio, who was on leave to address his mental health, just announced his retirement via his twitter account.
The Cavaliers came to an agreement with Rubio to buy out his contract, for which Cleveland will receive just over $6 million in compensation for the next two seasons.
His time as a Cav was special, and he was instrumental in Cleveland’s turn from a promising young team to solid playoff contender.
Across his two stretches in Cleveland he averaged 9.2 points, 5.1 assists and 3.1 rebounds per game. And although he only played a total of 67 games in the wine and gold due to injury, he scored 20 or more points in about 10 percent of these outings. He was effective when he was healthy.
Earning his respect on the court through his play, and off the court through his personality, Rubio was a favorite of both the crowd and the locker room. He will be missed by Cleveland and the NBA as a whole.
