Quentin Grimes has surprised the basketball world this season.
Grimes is currently having the season of his career. He has averaged 22.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 4.5 assists in 26 games for the Philadelphia 76ers. He has shot 48.7% from the field and 39.3% from the 3-point line.
After major injuries to Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Paul George, Grimes has emerged as Philadelphia’s primary offensive weapon.
The 76ers are already Grimes’ fourth team in his four-year career. Through patience and determination, Grimes was able to find the right situation to showcase his ability.
Grimes played three years in college. He spent two years at Kansas before transferring to Houston his junior year. In Houston, he won co-AAC Player of the Year, averaging 17.8 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2 assists.
In 2021, Grimes declared for the 2021 NBA Draft. The LA Clippers drafted him with the 25th overall pick, but traded him to the New York Knicks.
In three seasons with the Knicks, Grimes was unable to find a consistent role in New York. By his second year, he received the starting shooting guard role, but he found himself on the bench once again his third year.
Grimes’s three-year tenure as a Knick was underwhelming as he averaged just 8.6 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists. New York decided to part ways with Grimes in the middle of the 2023-24 season and traded him to the Detroit Pistons.
With the Pistons, Grimes only suited up for a total of 6 games. Despite Detroit’s historically bad season, where they won just 14 games, Grimes did not receive much opportunity. He averaged just 5.3 points in just under 20 minutes of play.
Grimes was on the move once again as Detroit traded him to the Dallas Mavericks in the 2024 offseason. Dallas was fresh off a finals appearance and Grimes had another opportunity to contribute to a winning team.
As a Maverick, Grimes doubled his scoring average. He averaged 10.2 points on 46.3% shooting from the field and 39.8% from the three-point line.
His shooting and defensive ability made him a perfect complimentary piece to a Luka Doncic-led offense, though this would never come to fruition.
Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison put the roster up for sale as the trade deadline rolled around. Nobody was safe, including Doncic, who was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Once again, Grimes was on the move.
The Mavs traded Grimes to the 76ers for Caleb Martin. Grimes was headed back east to Philadelphia, who were having a down season of their own. Despite this, Grimes saw this as an opportunity to show he was more than just a throw-in trade piece.
On March 17, 2025, Grimes scored a career high 46 points in an overtime loss to the Houston Rockets. He broke his career high of 44 points, which he had just scored 16 days prior.
With the season Grimes is having, he is sure set for a huge payday this upcoming offseason and will receive interest from many teams.
