Potential Landing Spots for Zach LaVine

Publish Date: June 28, 2022

NBA free agency starts in just a few days. Zach LaVine is one of the bigger free agents in the class. Here are potential landing spots for Zach LaVine.

1. Chicago Bulls

The most likely destination for LaVine is to return to Chicago. He had five great seasons with the Bulls and has made two-straight All-Star Games. LaVine fit in well with the Bulls, as they had a 46-36 record and made the playoffs last season.

If LaVine returns to the Bulls, he and DeMar DeRozan can provide the nucleus for the team as they try to compete again in the Eastern Conference. Chicago has the best odds to have LaVine on the roster next season after he played so well for the franchise the last five seasons.

2. Los Angeles Lakers

LaVine is from Los Angeles and could want to return home. After missing the playoffs last year, the Lakers need better players around LeBron James and Anthony Davis. LaVine could be a great for the Lakers, as he can get to the basket and shoots decently well from the perimeter.

The Lakers will need to figure some things out with their roster construction. Russell Westbrook opted in to his contract for the 2022-2023 season, so it will be hard for the Lakers to find a way to afford LaVine. They will need to offload Westbrook, but that is a risk that the Lakers may be willing to take in order to improve the team’s chances of winning a championship.

3. San Antonio Spurs

The Spurs haven’t been the same since Tim Duncan retired. Gregg Popovich has needed a new star to find playoff success and LaVine can fill that role. Popovich has experience working with LaVine when the two spent time together with Team USA.

San Antonio has some cap space to work with and could afford LaVine without re-shaping the entire roster. One concern he may have signing with the Spurs is that he will not have as much help as other potential destinations. With the other teams on this list, he will have much more help and could have a better chance of winning the NBA championship.

4. Portland Trail Blazers

After years of trying to win with Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum, the Blazers shipped McCollum out in hopes of building anew around Lillard. They can do that by signing LaVine, who will give the Blazers some more size and athleticism to work with.

By moving McCollum, the Trail Blazers will have enough wiggle room to acquire LaVine if they choose. Bringing him in can help the Trail Blazers after they finished 13th in the West last season. LaVine and Lillard would be one of the best tandems in the league.

5. Atlanta Hawks

The Hawks have been aggressive in trying to improve their team around Trae Young. John Collins was on the trading block and although he hasn’t been traded, it shows just how far the Hawks are willing to go in order to increase their chances of competing for a championship.

Atlanta has acquired plenty of wings over the last few offseason. LaVine would be an improvement over them all. The Hawks may have to get rid of some of their wings currently on their roster, but they can get creative.
