Payton, 26, has played for the Magic, Suns, Pelicans and Knicks in his career. In his career, he averages 11 points and 6.6 assists per game.
He started 36 games for the Knicks last season and will likely have to start at that position again unless the Knicks bring in someone else before the season gets started.
