Recap:

The Minnesota Timberwolves made two major trades this summer that have changed the look of the team entering the 2026-27 season. Their biggest move of the offseason was trading for point guard LaMelo Ball from the Charlotte Hornets. The full details of the trade included the Hornets sending Ball and Josh Green to Minnesota in exchange for Naz Reid, a 2033 unprotected first-round pick and three second-round picks (2029, 2032 and 2033).

When healthy, Ball has been one of the most electric players in the NBA and a dynamic scorer. The main issue for Ball, however, has been his inability to stay on the court, as he played just 105 total games from 2022-23 through 2024-25.

Ball bounced back this past season by playing in 72 games for the Hornets, where he averaged 20.1 points, 4.8 rebounds and 7.1 assists per game while shooting 36.8% from three-point range. If he can remain healthy, Ball and Anthony Edwards could become one of the most dangerous backcourt duos in the entire league.

The second major trade Minnesota was involved in was sending Julius Randle away in a three-team deal. The Timberwolves traded Randle and the No. 28 overall pick in the NBA Draft to the Brooklyn Nets in a deal that also sent center Nic Claxton to the Chicago Bulls. Minnesota acquired Brooklyn’s No. 33 overall pick in exchange for Randle and the No. 28 pick.

While it may not seem like the Timberwolves gained much from the trade, the primary reason for the move was to offload Randle’s contract and create additional cap space. That flexibility allowed them to lock up forward Ayo Dosunmu on a new five-year, $112 million contract. Dosunmu split time between the Bulls and Timberwolves last season and averaged 14.8 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.6 assists while shooting an excellent 43.9% from three-point range. His new contract shows that Minnesota views him as an important part of its future plans.

With the departures of Randle and Naz Reid, Dosunmu and Jaden McDaniels will both need to step up and help replace that production as the Timberwolves adjust to a frontcourt that has undergone significant changes this summer.

The Timberwolves remain one of the most dangerous and talented teams in the NBA, and it will be interesting to see whether the major moves they made this offseason pay off and help them rise above the fierce competition in the Western Conference.
