The 2023 NBA Draft takes place on Thursday, June 22, as both rounds are wrapped up in one night. As it approaches, TGH will be taking a quick look some teams’ draft strategies, and shedding some light on what direction they will go with their picks.. Here is the Minnesota Timberwolves NBA Draft profile for 2023.
Minnesota made the playoffs for a second consecutive season, marking the first time they’ve achieved this since 2003-2004. After posting a record of 42-40, they had to play two Play-In games to become the eighth seed in the Western Conference. The Timberwolves lost the first round in five games.
The Timberwolves have three picks in the 2023 NBA Draft.
Second Round (one pick):
Pick #53: Jalen Pickett, G, Penn State
Picket may seem like an odd pick when the Timberwolves seem a bit crowded at guard with Conley and Edwards playing decently well together. But he is a unique kind of player that could fit the Timberwolves loose offensive style very well.
Minnesota has been absolutely notorious for turning over the ball and making sloppy mistakes in these last two playoff appearances. Pickett is allergic to coughing up the ball and can be a really polished playmaker right off of the bat. Having two big guards like Ant Man and Pickett in the backcourt could also make matchups a nightmare for opposing teams.
His catch-and-shoot potential is nothing totally eye-popping, but is there in flashes, and he can also score around the rim. But the T-Wolves need a guard with an eye for buttoned-up play more than anything. Pickett is the best they can get at that skillset with such a late pick.
