The 2023 NBA Draft takes place on Thursday, June 22, as both rounds are wrapped up in one night. As it approaches, TGH will be taking a quick look some teams’ draft strategies, and shedding some light on what direction they will go with their picks.. Here is the Miami Heat NBA Draft profile for 2023.
Miami had a bit of an inauspicious regular season, going 44-38 and qualifying only for the Play-In Tournament. After they escaped the tourney, they put together an historic run to the NBA Finals, becoming the first 8th seed to reach the final round since the Knicks in 1999. This run included beating the 1-seeded Bucks and finishing a series against the Celtics in which they went up 3-0, only for the Celtics to force a Game 7.
The Heat have one pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.
First Round (one pick):
Pick #18: Dariq Whitehead, G, Duke
Some of the more polished pure shooters will be gone at pick number 18. That leaves the Heat to pick maybe a more balanced player while giving up a few percentage points in pure shooting stroke.
Whitehead likes to score around the rim, and is talented at that. But, he also scores the ball at an over 45 percent clip on spot-up three pointers. There’s also plenty of tape suggesting his mid-range game is steadily improving, and will translate to the NBA.
He also plays hard defensively, being able to guard the one spot maybe even up to the four with his 6-foot-9 frame. Although, his recent injury is a concern and he’ll get stripped of the ball regularly in his first year, this is still a very Miami Heat-type pick.
