The Los Angeles Lakers may have found their next head coach. According to reports, the Lakers are expected to hire Tyronn Lue.
At the end of the regular season, the Lakers parted ways with their head coach, Luke Walton, who coached the Lakers for three seasons. Walton became the head coach of the Sacramento Kings shortly after parting ways with the Lakers. Since then, the Lakers have searched for a new coach.
During their search, the Lakers interviewed a number of candidates. Their leading candidates were Lue and Monty Williams. On Friday, the Phoenix Suns hired Williams as their head coach. Williams will become the Suns’ fifth coach in five seasons. He is currently an assistant coach for the 76ers, but will become the Suns head coach after the Sixers’ postseason ends.
Lue’s last coaching job was with the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavaliers fired Lue shortly after the start of this season. The Cavs started their season 0-6 and fired Lue on October 28. He was replaced by Larry Drew, who mutually parted ways with the Cavs last month.
Prior to his release, Lue coached the Cavs since the middle of the 2015-2016 season. He led the Cavs to a championship in 2016. Lue is familiar with LeBron James as James played under him from 2016 to 2018. Lue could be reunited with his former star player and guide the young players of the Lakers’ roster. He could help them reach their potential and become a vital part of the Lakers’ success.
While there is no deal in place, Lue is in Las Vegas waiting for the Lakers’ decision.
Lue is the favorite for the coaching position. Legendary Lakers coach Phil Jackson suggested to team owner Jeanie Buss that Lue is a really good coach for the Lakers. This is a high endorsement that helps Lue’s case.
At this point, the deal seems inevitable. Both sides will work towards a deal before it becomes official. If Lue does become the coach, it will be an opportunity for Lue to develop a young team. It is a move that benefits both sides and puts the Lakers in a position to become a playoff bound team. All it takes is the right deal.
