Klay Thompson is expected to sign with the Miami Heat after agreeing to a contract buyout with the Dallas Mavericks, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Thompson and the Mavericks were able to work out a buyout from his $17.5 million expiring contract, with Thompson indicating that he’d like to play for a contending franchise. This is a big move not only for Thompson, but also for the Heat, who have had an extremely busy offseason reconstructing their roster and making one of the biggest blockbuster deals of the summer by trading for star forward Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The Heat are clearly in win-now mode after trading away a large chunk of their young core in exchange for Antetokounmpo, and adding a lethal three-point shooter in Thompson is a huge addition for a team lacking perimeter shooting. Thompson’s presence will now boost Miami’s backcourt group alongside players such as Davion Mitchell, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Pelle Larsson.
Thompson, 36, is a 13-year NBA veteran with four NBA championships and five All-Star selections to his name. He has also earned All-NBA honors twice in his career. He’s known for his stellar three-point prowess, boasting an excellent 40.9% career average, and averaged 11.7 points while shooting 38.3% from three-point range last season with the Mavericks.
