Davis was another second-year player who took a huge jump during this college basketball season. Like many of the others, he has declared for the 2022 NBA Draft.
As a three-star recruit out of Wisconsin, Davis decided to stay in-state and play for the Badgers. In his freshman season, he averaged 7.0 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. Wisconsin lost in the second round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament. Davis raised his averages to 19.7 points and 8.2 rebounds per game in the 2021-22 season. After getting a no. 3 seed in the 2022 NCAA Tournament, the Badgers were knocked out in the second round.
Following a great college season, Davis is preparing for the next level. He is currently projected to be a lottery pick in the 2022 NBA Draft.
Johnny Davis Strengths
Davis used the 2021-22 season to prove he could score the basketball. He routinely gets to the baskets and can finish over or around taller players. His mid-range jumper can be an efficient shot for him, even if it is a dying aspect of NBA basketball. In the past, he has shown the ability to shoot from deep, although last season he shot an inconsistent 30.6 percent from behind the arc.
In college basketball, Davis was one of the best rebounding guards in the country. He averaged 8.2 per game and even averaged 4.1 as a reserve freshman. His ability to play hard and recognize how a ball will hit and come off the rim really helps him. He then has the athleticism to go and get the ball at a high point.
He has good athleticism, which helps him in a few areas. Davis gets a pretty good first step to beat defenders off the dribble. Once past his defender, he can elevate and throw down dunks. His speed helps him in transition as well. As mentioned, he can rebound well with his ability to jump higher than bigger players. His defense is great because of his footspeed and aggressive demeanor.
Johnny Davis Weaknesses
Davis has to limit his turnovers at the next level. While he isn’t a point guard, it is a bit alarming that he had more turnovers than assists in his college career. He was the focus of a lot of defenses, so knowing when to be aggressive and when to defer to teammates could help his turnover numbers.
As listed earlier, his 3-point shot needs to be more consistent. He was good at catching and shooting, but his pull-up shot from deep will need some work. If he can somehow regain his form from his freshman season (38.9 percent), while adjusting to NBA range, he can be a solid shooter.
In the NBA, Davis will have to improve his shot selection. He took a decent amount of contested shots as Wisconsin’s best scorer. With other offensive threats and more spacing in the NBA, the path to choosing better shots is there, but it will be something he needs to work on.
Projected Draft Range:Â Lottery Pick
