Atlanta Hawks forward John Collins has been handed a 25-game suspension by the NBA. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Collins tested positive for growth hormone.

He played five games this year before the suspension was handed down. In those games he was averaging over 30 minutes, with 17 points on 52.5 percent shooting. He was also raising his 3-point attempts and accuracy, even though the sample size is small.
Last season, during Collins’ sophomore campaign, he had 19.5 points per game on 56 percent shooting while distributing two assists per game and pulling down almost 10 rebounds. He played in 59 of 82 contests.
Clearly Collins is a big piece of this young, rebuilding Hawks team. The suspension is going to hamstring the team’s scoring ability for a good chunk of the season. Although Atlanta probably was not going to vie for any sort of playoff contention, anyway.
The Hawks continue their season without Collins on Tuesday against the San Antonio Spurs.
