The Utah Jazz are trading Rudy Gay and a second round pick to the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for forward/center John Collins. He is owed $78 million over the next three years, leading pundits to believe the Hawks were mainly focused on getting his salary off of their books.
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported the news via Twitter on Monday.
Gay will be going into his age-37 season in 2023-2024. He was originally drafted eighth overall in the 2006 NBA Draft by the Houston Rockets, who traded him away to the Grizzlies immediately. It will be his 20th season in the league and his sixth different franchise.
Collins entered the league in the 2017-2018 season, making the All-Rookie team in his first year. While he’s never reached “star” status, he’s been very consistent averaging over 10.5 points in every season he’s played.
