Richardson was a four-star recruit in the class of 2024 who signed with Michigan State out of Florida, following in his dad’s footsteps. He improved as the season went on with the Spartans, finishing with averages of 12.1 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game. His play helped the Spartans make the Elite Eight of the 2025 NCAA Tournament.
Following the season, Richardson declared for the 2025 NBA Draft. He is currently projected to be a first-round pick.
Richardson showed sharpshooting ability from deep at Michigan State. He shot 41.2 percent from deep during his time at Michigan State, which helped space the floor for their many bigs. Richardson was able to shoot off the dribble and off the catch pretty well and was specifically good at getting open for 3-pointers when running around screens.
While he wasn’t the point guard for Michigan State, he showed great ball-handling ability. Richardson takes care of the basketball, as he had a 1.9 assists to 0.8 assists per game. He is able to get past the man guarding him and drive into the lane, but also has enough moves and agility to create his own shot.
His basketball IQ shows that he grew up around the game of basketball. On offense, he sees the floor well and can make the correct play, whether it is him shooting or passing. He knows how to get open when operating off the ball. Defensively, he knows how to rotate and provide help defense.
Richardson is shorter for an NBA guard, measuring in at just over 6-foot tall. He does have a 6-foot-6 wingspan, but will have to match up against much bigger players. Richardson played a lot off the ball in college and if he can’t play point guard, he will have to guard and be guarded by players who have a matchup advantage.
He is more of a below-the-rim finisher and doesn’t have the athleticism of his father. Richardson has a quick first step and solid speed, but lacks great leaping ability. With his lack of size, if could be harder for him to finish at the basket at the next level and contest shots of opponents.
At the beginning of the college season, Richardson wasn’t used as much. Down the stretch his role increased and he was used more frequently. He can adapt to different roles at the NBA level, but it might take some time. Richardson did earn some more respect down the stretch, but it would’ve been nice to see him used more early in the season.
