McCain didn’t have the quickest start to his college career, but developed well over the season. Now he is in the 2024 NBA Draft.
As a five-star recruit, McCain signed with Duke out of California. He was one of the best freshman scorers in the country. McCain finished the season with 14.3 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. He helped Duke reach the Elite Eight.
Following the NCAA Tournament exit, McCain declared for the 2024 NBA Draft. He is currently projected to be a lottery pick.
McCain is a good shooter in a few different ways. He can shoot well off the dribble, but also has the ability to catch and shoot well. McCain can shoot on the move as well. He shot over 40 percent from 3-point range, but he can also shoot well from mid-range. From the free-throw line, he shot 88.5 percent.
His ball-handling is also solid. He protects the ball well and has a little wiggle, although he can create more separation. McCain has a positive assist-to-turnover ratio, which is solid especially because he wasn’t the lead point guard for Duke. He operates the pick-and-roll well and can make the correct basketball play.
Especially for his size, McCain is a good rebounder. He averaged five a game at Duke, showcasing his ability to read how the ball will come off the rim well. He boxes out and can go high-point the ball to aid his team. After getting the rebound, he can push the ball in transition. Most of his rebounds come on the defensive end.
McCain is a smaller guard in this class, which can make it hard for him to match up in the NBA. He does have a filled-out frame, but has limitations with his height and wingspan. This could limit him on both ends of the floor in the NBA.
His lack of size makes it tough for him to finish around the rim. He can struggle to finish through contact. McCain can score in the paint, but he has to get creative or use floaters. Most of his scoring will likely come from the perimeter at the next level.
While he is a good shooter, McCain can be streaky with his scoring performances. He had 12 games of scoring in the single digits. Half of those came in the first month of the season, so he did find more consistency as the season went on, but two happened in postseason play. More reliability as a scorer will be needed for him to reach his full potential.
