The 2020 NBA Draft will be an important event for teams to build for their future. Here is the Jahmi’us Ramsey 2020 NBA Draft Profile.
Background
Position: Guard
Size: 6-foot-4, 195 pounds
School: Texas Tech
Class: Freshman
Ramsey was a four-star recruit, but really outplayed his recruiting rank at Texas Tech. After one season in Lubbock, Ramsey is now getting ready for the 2020 NBA Draft.
In his only season at Texas Tech, Ramsey averaged 15 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. One of his marquee games came against Kansas when he scored 26 points, which was one of seven times he had 20 points this past season. Texas Tech was squarely on the bubble for the 2020 NCAA Tournament with a 18-13 record before the season was canceled.
He played 27 games for the Red Raiders, but it was enough to pique the interest of the NBA. Ramsey is currently projected to be selected in the middle of the first round or late in the first round.
Strengths
Ramsey has a solid offensive game. He can create his own shot by driving to the basket, pulling up in the mid-range and shooting from deep. His ability to drive makes him a candidate to be a combo guard. He can shoot from all areas of the floor, which makes him tough to guard. Ramsey shot 42.6 percent from three-point range and has a shot that looks like he can be consistent in the NBA.
He is a good ball-handler, which will help his case to be a combo guard in the NBA. Ramsey can push the ball in transition and convert. In the half-court offense, Ramsey can beat his man off the dribble. He is also able to get into the lane and cause problems for defenses. When asked to, Ramsey can run an offense at a decent level because of his ability to handle the ball.
His athleticism is great in a few different ways. He has good speed and quickness, which he uses to his advantage on both ends of the floor. Ramsey can pull off some highlight-reel dunks with his jumping ability. He can make impact plays defensively because he has good athleticism. Because he has athleticism, he can focus on improving other parts of his game in the NBA.
Weaknesses
In order to become trusted as a combo guard, Ramsey needs to protect the ball better. He averaged 2.0 turnovers per game, which is too many for a player that is not a team’s primary ball-handler. He has to do a better job of reading defenses and not putting the ball in harm’s way. If he can improve his turnover numbers he can be trusted to run an offense more.
If he protects the ball better, Ramsey can possibly become a better playmaker. His assist to turnover ratio was 2.2 to 2.0, which isn’t great. He needs to look to pass to the open man when he is driving the basketball. Ramsey can be more aware of a defense and become a better passer with more reps running an offense.
Ramsey may need to be taken out of games in crunch time because he is not a good free-throw shooter. He shot 64 percent from the free-throw line at Texas Tech. For a player who shot a good percentage from the three-point line, Ramsey should be able to shoot better free-throws. His 64 percent shooting from the line would rank 107th in the league this season.
Projected Draft Range: Mid to Late First Round Pick
